How to Stay Entertained While You’re Stuck at Home

Ever since quarantine began, whether self imposed or not, everyone has been searching for ways to stay entertained safely from home. We asked our friends and coworkers how they’ve been staying busy and we’d like to share some great recommendations from the Warp & Phil crew!

Since the pandemic began, I have read more books than the previous 5 years…combined! My pandemic favorites have been fellow Kansas Citian Gillian Flynn’s three novels: Sharp Objects, Dark Places, and Gone Girl. If you appreciate non-fiction or memoirs, I cannot recommend Educated by Tara Westover enough.

My work from home must haves are a hot cup of tea and a new podcast episode to start the day. I have been listening to the Ologies podcast by Alie Ward to learn something new. I try to keep my desk as clean as possible and maybe have a candle lit. My new co-worker (roommates dog) keeps the rug warm next to me all day long. To wrap up our work day we take a nice long walk.

“Haha… so for some reason I have been hooked to the Golden Girls. Never watched it before when it first aired many years ago, but for some reason now I have to watch it every night one right after the other. I’m not sure how the addiction started but those girls make me laugh every night before going to sleep. You know what they say ‘Laughter is the best medicine.’

Watched Outlander (show) early on in lockdown and then started the books this summer, they are both fantastic! Had an Aaron Sorkin vibe going for a bit and re-watched The West Wing and The Newsroom. Been watching the Marvel movies and lots of Disney!

I watched The Sopranos from start to finish for the first time, which quickly became part of my weekday summer routine. With summer ending and fall approaching I’ve started reading Dracula to put me in the early Halloween spirit.

I have been loving a variety of podcasts, books, and shows this summer! Specifically, I have binged all of “Schitt’s Creek” (which is incredible) and re-watching “New Girl” because it’s a forever favorite. For books, I have been loving Sally Rooney and read both “Normal People” and “Conversations with Friends” ! My podcasts favs are “Up First” for a news update in the mornings and “Armchair Expert” during the work days! Anything light, airy, and comical has been my go-to these past few months!!

I’ve started playing video games! They never interested me much in the past but I was getting a little burnt out on movies and shows while quarantined and wanted to feel engaged. I just completed the game “Little Nightmares” which was a spooky puzzle game. It was very challenging and a fun way to shake up my time! I’m excited to try another.

I’ve played more golf during the pandemic than I have probably my whole life because it is one of safer social activities to do. My golf game is still horrible but I’ll get a good shot every now and then.

This summer has been such an opportunity to catch up on my list of shows to binge watch! I managed to finally watch all of Westworld, and I recently discovered Lucifer on Netflix, a supernatural crime drama that I highly recommend. To stay in the right frame of mind, every Monday I keep things light by listening to my favorite long-running comedy advice podcast, My Brother, My Brother and Me. The McElroy brothers never fail to make me laugh, even in the midst of quarantine life!
