Our 2020 Hotel Interior Design Trend Predictions

As we look ahead to 2020, Warp and Phil is excited to share our predictions for hotel design trends for the upcoming year.

To craft our predictions, we surveyed our team for their insights and compared them to what we’re seeing on social media and in our own projects. Now, we’ve identified several trends we believe will be the stars of the hotel scene in 2020 (and beyond).

The Natural: Materials, Finishes, Fabrics

We are seeing a trend towards the natural in all areas of hotel interiors. Hailey Barth, our Procurement Coordinator, sees materials returning to natural wood, walls of exposed brick, and accents of exposed metals (brass especially). She predicts natural finishes will be the key to achieving this style, which has roots in Scandinavian design and industrial lofts. Barry Oltsik, our COO, agrees, adding that the modern touch of matte finishes will also be prevalent.

In the same vein, Rachel Coffey (WeCare Specialist) predicts fabrics will be trending towards lush, natural suede and vegan leather. Michelle Brox, one of our Quoting Specialists, adds that knit throws and pillows are up-and-coming textured accents that add to the natural feel of these rooms.

Color and Pattern

For color, we’ve identified two very different trends. On one hand, color is having its day in 2020: we see the wow factor in bold, contrasting colors and prints, especially with lush fabrics and modern, geometric patterns. On the other hand, neutral colors (in combination with natural textures) are a contender: Josh Panegasser (WeCare Specialist) predicts straight lines and neutral colors with an emphasis on functionality over form, in keeping with the trend toward the natural.

On the fun side of things, several of our team members including Erin Key (Pre-Production Services Manager) have predicted more layering and mixing of contrasting and complementing patterns, both in fabrics as well as wallpapers, tile, and more. Rachel sees patterned tiling in bold, modern styles becoming more prevalent in restaurant areas on floors and walls alike.

Public Areas and Lighting

As hotel guests spend more and more time out of their rooms, public areas are becoming larger, more elaborate spaces where guests can socialize and work in style and comfort. To go along with this shift, Hailey predicts more natural light being utilized in these areas, and Rachel is seeing more and more exposed light bulbs (and the ever popular Edison bulbs) taking over traditional light fixtures.

Jamie Prendergast (Sales Specialist) along with many other team members predicts that more and more indoor plants will be introduced in these same areas. That’s not surprising, as the benefits of having plants around - increased productivity, air quality, and relaxation - have been known for a long time. Sam Komosa, one of our WeCare Specialists, notes that plants bring in a modern touch along with a natural feel to the decor.

Sustainability

In 2020, more than ever before, the importance of sustainable materials is evident. Many of our team are predicting a rise in sustainable products in the hospitality industry, and Michelle in particular is seeing an anti-polyester sentiment at large; she predicts a prevailing use of natural fibers.
